How to Replace a Deck Board with Hidden Fasteners

Decking is a great addition to any outdoor living space. It provides a perfect area to enjoy fresh air, entertain guests and relax during warmer months. A well-maintained decking can also add substantial value to your home. With time, though, even the most durable decking will show some signs of wear and tear, and damaged boards will eventually require replacement. Fortunately, replacing a deck board with hidden fasteners is an easy task that can be accomplished with some basic knowledge and the right tools.

Before starting, it's important to purchase materials that match your existing deck boards. Once you have the right supply, you can follow these simple steps to replace the damaged decking board with hidden fasteners.

1. Preparation

Begin by removing the damaged deck board carefully. Take a flat pry bar and wedge it lengthwise between the deck and the damaged board. Wiggle the bad board until it comes loose. Using a saw, cut through any partially stuck nails or screws, and remove the old board completely. With a clean space, you can prep for the new board's installation by measuring and cutting it to the same length as the original board. It's important to leave some space on either end to allow for expansion as temperature and moisture change.

2. Plan your Hidden Fasteners

One of the advantages of using hidden fasteners is that they provide a consistent and professional finish. You should make a template to follow the spacing and construction of the previous board. Begin by setting an edge clip to one end of the board, and then align the next board and add another edge clip. Continue until you've laid out all the edge clips on one board. At this point, you'll need to double-check the spacing, and then mark and drill holes on the board. Each clip will require a 3/8-inch hole drilled at the marked positions, which will later accommodate the screws.

3. Install Hidden Fasteners

With the layout template in place, you're ready to install the clips that will attach the new decking board to the joists of the deck. Installation of these clips will vary, depending on the manufacturer's instructions and the type of clips you are using. Generally speaking, the process is as follows:

Slot the first clip over the first joist in front of the boards. Screw the flat side of the clip to the joist, pushing it down to fix it into position. Ensure the clip's rounded edge points up also to decrease the chances of water penetration. The clip's flat side should be overlapping the joist, ensuring that the first board screws in over it. Then, align the next clip with the opposite end of the board and screw it into place. You should continue the installation process as you lay down the board.

4. Following Joiner Boards

As you finish laying down the board, the end of the hidden clip on the joist will be exposed since it will not exist behind the deck board. For that reason, you'll want to add a joiner board to shore up the end. Cut the joiner board to size and install it, tightly securing it to the joist. Finish up by adding screws to the concealed clip, which holds the board in place.

5. Final touches

Lastly, once the board is in place, you should fill any visible screw holes with wood putty. Afterward, use a sandpaper block or orbital sander to level out the filler and then add a coat of wood preservative to the board.

Conclusion

Replacing a deck board with hidden fasteners is an easy project that can provide a lasting and professional result. Remember to check the spacing to ensure that you maintain consistency across the installation. Follow the steps accurately to ensure that the decking board fits comfortably and securely in position. By doing so, you can quickly replace; any damaged board, and have a clean and perfect-looking outdoor living space.
