Paper Fastener: How to Create One in Easy Steps
For those who love the art of paper folding or origami, you would agree that a paper fastener is an indispensable tool. A paper fastener is a simple tool that holds papers together, especially in some models of origami that require the folding of multiple papers together. They are also convenient when staplers are not available, and you need to bind papers together. Besides, making a paper fastener is affordable, easy, and eco-friendly as the materials are readily available. In this article, we'll guide you on how to make a paper fastener that will come handy for any paper-folding activity.
Materials needed
- Two square papers (preferably origami papers)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Ruler
Step 1- Cut your first paper
Take one of the square papers and use a ruler to measure and mark 1cm on each of the sides of the paper. Take a pair of scissors to cut out the measured squares from each of the corners of the paper. After cutting out the four squares, you should have a large rectangular paper.
Step 2- Cut your second paper
Take the second square paper, and repeat the process in step one to create a large rectangular paper.
Step 3- Fold the first paper
Place the first paper vertically before you, and use your ruler to measure 5cm from one of the long edges. Make a crease on this mark, indicating the top of the first fold line. Next, measure 3cm from the first crease and make a second fold line. Lastly, measure 3cm from the second crease and make another third fold line. The first paper should now have two creases dividing the large rectangle into three parts, with the middle part being the largest.
Step 4- Fold the second paper
Place the second paper vertically before you, and measure 2cm from one of the long edges. Make a crease on this mark, indicating the top of the first fold line. Next, measure 1.5cm from the first crease and make a second fold line. The second paper should now have two creases dividing the large rectangle into three parts, with the middle part being the smallest.
Step 5- Assemble
Spread glue on the bottom strip of the first paper, which should be the part that is not folded. Next, align the top of the second paper with the bottom of the first paper, such that the top of the second paper sits on the glue. Press firmly to create a bond. Afterward, fold the ends of the second paper over to the back of the first paper, and glue it down to create a neat finish.
Step 6- Complete the fastener
Fold the two bottom flaps up and over towards the center of the paper fastener. Afterward, press the creases down to seal the fastener. Your paper fastener should now be complete and ready to use.
In summary, making a paper fastener is easy and requires only a few common materials found in most households or offices. With a little practice, you can make unique and creative paper fasteners to suit your preference, which will make your paper-folding activities more fun and engaging.
